Scoring runs
WBSC · 2026–2029A runner scores by legally touching first, second and third base, then home plate, before the inning ends. Runs depend on the kind of final out, not simply on which player touches a base first. A run cannot count when the final out is a force out or the batter-runner is retired before reaching first base.
The rule
A runner scores by legally touching first, second and third base, then home plate, before the inning ends. Runs depend on the kind of final out, not simply on which player touches a base first. A run cannot count when the final out is a force out or the batter-runner is retired before reaching first base.
In practice
A preceding runner’s out can also cancel later runners’ scores. With a non-force tag play, the timing of the run and final out can matter. Missing a base or leaving early on a caught fly may be challenged by a legal appeal; additional appeals after the final out can remove a run.
