The run-ahead rule and shortened games

WBSC · 2026–2029
In short

A game ends under the run-ahead rule at a lead of 15 runs after 3 innings, 10 after 4, or 7 after 5. If the visiting team reaches the margin in its batting half, the home team still gets its corresponding turn. If the home team reaches it, that inning need not be completed.

The rule

A game ends under the run-ahead rule at a lead of 15 runs after 3 innings, 10 after 4, or 7 after 5. If the visiting team reaches the margin in its batting half, the home team still gets its corresponding turn. If the home team reaches it, that inning need not be completed.

In practice

Wait until the play finishes before declaring the game over. A game-ending home run counts all resulting runs. A game stopped for weather or danger normally needs at least 5 completed innings to qualify as regulation, with specific exceptions when the home team is ahead. A suspended game is not automatically a completed result.
