The rule

Cramp, nausea, breathlessness and similar illness do not create a standard medical timeout: continue or concede the game and use the available game interval, then resume or concede the match. The referee first confirms and classifies an injury.

In practice

A new self-inflicted injury allows up to three minutes; an accidental injury involving both players up to 15. An injury caused solely by the opponent has different match-award consequences. Recurrence of an earlier injury does not earn fresh recovery time. The injured player decides whether to resume.
