The rule

Strike the ball once, without prolonged racket contact, before its second floor bounce. It must reach the front wall above the tin and below the out-line without first touching the floor; side or back walls may be used.

In practice

The ball must rebound without touching the tin. A ball touching the out-line or anything above it is out. The service line does not restrict ordinary returns. A volley is allowed; the receiver need not let a good serve bounce.
