The rule

Turning includes losing sight of the ball or opponent by rotating, or letting the ball pass behind the body from one side to the other. Stop if striking would endanger the opponent; special interference provisions apply.

In practice

If a ball heading directly to the front wall hits the opponent on a first attempt without turning, the striker normally wins a stroke if the return would be good. After turning, a hit normally awards a stroke to the opponent unless they deliberately intercepted it. Side-wall paths and further attempts have different let rules.
