Back protection and prohibited aids

FIS · 2026 / 2027
In short

A back protector is mandatory in snowboard cross under the supplied equipment specification. Back support may not provide an aerodynamic advantage. Protective equipment must therefore serve protection rather than become a device for improving speed. The snowboard section does not impose the same blanket back-protector obligation on every other discipline.

The rule

A back protector is mandatory in snowboard cross under the supplied equipment specification. Back support may not provide an aerodynamic advantage. Protective equipment must therefore serve protection rather than become a device for improving speed. The snowboard section does not impose the same blanket back-protector obligation on every other discipline.

In practice

Riders may wear gloves but may not carry other items on their hands or use poles, sticks or other devices to supplement balance or deliberately control speed. Do not import the separate ski-cross equipment dimensions or airbag specifications into snowboard rules: the disciplines have distinct equipment provisions.

Numbers refer to PDF viewer pages. Topic numbers are editorial. Snowboarding includes timed gate races, snowboard cross and judged park-and-pipe events. Slalom and giant slalom reward fast, correct runs; parallel events add direct duels. Snowboard cross combines terrain features with racing in groups. Halfpipe, slopestyle, big air and street style use judging rather than simply the fastest time.
