The rule

The competitor is responsible for using safe, working equipment that complies with FIS rules, including clothing and bindings. Officials may check equipment before or during the season, or after a protest. Where appointed FIS experts use official measuring tools, the current measurement is final regardless of earlier checks.

In practice

With well-founded suspicion, officials can seize equipment with witnesses present and send it sealed for an authorised final examination. New technical developments require FIS approval. Fluorinated wax and tuning products containing fluorine are prohibited in every FIS discipline and at every level; using them in competition leads to disqualification.

Numbers refer to PDF viewer pages. Topic numbers are editorial. Snowboarding includes timed gate races, snowboard cross and judged park-and-pipe events. Slalom and giant slalom reward fast, correct runs; parallel events add direct duels. Snowboard cross combines terrain features with racing in groups. Halfpipe, slopestyle, big air and street style use judging rather than simply the fastest time.
