Appealable mistakes

Missing a required base or failing to retouch after a caught fly can be penalised when the defence makes a valid appeal. Touching the runner or the relevant base with the ball must clearly communicate the appeal. Runners may sometimes correct an error before the opportunity closes.

Timing and runs

Appeals normally must precede the next pitch, play or attempted play, and the defence must preserve its opportunity at the end of an inning. An apparent additional out can affect whether a run counts. The effect of a preceding runner’s failure is different from that of a following runner, so the order of runners matters.
