Home runs and awarded bases
WBSC · 2025–2026Why some balls award bases and how the award is measured.
Balls leaving the field
A fair fly over the qualifying outfield boundary earns a home run; runners must still touch the bases. A fair ball bouncing out generally awards two bases. A thrown ball entering dead-ball territory also commonly awards two, but the starting point depends on the type and timing of the throw.
Applying the award
A pitch or a pitcher’s throw from the rubber going directly out of play normally awards one base. Distinguish that from a later deflection or a fielder’s throw. Awards do not excuse missed bases, passing another runner or other running violations. The umpire places runners according to the specific play, not a universal overthrow shortcut.
