Legal advancement

Runners touch bases in sequence and must return in reverse order when required. A runner forced to advance can be retired by a defender holding the ball on the forced base. Otherwise a legal tag is normally needed. First base may be overrun safely when the runner returns promptly without trying for second.

Other running outs

A runner can be out for passing a preceding runner, abandoning the effort or leaving the permitted path to avoid a tag. The path is established by the runner’s position when the tag attempt starts; it is not a permanently fixed line. Interfering with a protected fielder creates separate consequences.
