Interference and obstruction
WBSC · 2025–2026The difference between hindering a defender and blocking a runner.
Interference
Offensive interference hinders a defender’s protected opportunity to field or make a play. The runner must avoid a fielder handling a batted ball, while intentional interference with a throw is judged separately. Spectator, coach and umpire interference have their own remedies; an accidental encounter is not automatically treated like deliberate disruption.
Obstruction
A defender without the ball and without the relevant fielding entitlement must not impede a runner. When a play is being made on the obstructed runner, the ball can become dead immediately. Other obstruction is delayed while play develops. The umpire awards the bases needed to remove the disadvantage; advancing beyond that protection carries risk.
