The diamond

Teams alternate batting and defending, aiming to score more runs by completing the bases in order. The standard diamond has 90-foot sides; the pitching rubber is 60 feet 6 inches from home plate. First, second and third base are 15-inch squares. The event table provides smaller dimensions for the youngest category.

Equipment and safety

Bats, balls, gloves and uniforms must meet the equipment rules. Protective helmets are required, and catchers need the prescribed protective equipment. Event-specific bat approvals and helmet requirements appear in the appendix; an approved adult bat or helmet is not automatically suitable for every youth competition.
