Ice hockey / Rule 54

Holding, hooking and tripping

IIHF · 2026/27
In short

Illegal restraint and interference away from the puck.

Movement

Holding an opponent or their stick, hooking to restrict movement and tripping are offences. Legitimately occupying space is different from using a hand, stick or lateral movement to block an opponent without the puck.

Consequences

Ordinary offences can attract a minor penalty; dangerous actions can bring stronger sanctions under the applicable rule. A foul denying a qualifying breakaway may instead lead to a penalty shot or an awarded goal.
