Ice hockey / Rule 22
Misconduct and removal
IIHF · 2026/27In short
Personal exclusions are different from team penalties.
Misconduct
A misconduct excludes a player for 10 minutes but allows an immediate substitute unless another penalty also reduces the team. After the time expires, the player waits for a stoppage. A second misconduct in the same game produces automatic game misconduct.
Game misconduct
Game misconduct removes the offender for the rest of the game. A replacement is allowed subject to any accompanying time penalty. The offence is reported, and further disciplinary action may follow. This is different from merely serving a minor penalty.
