Ice hockey / Rule 85
Puck out of bounds
IIHF · 2026/27In short
Stoppages, netting and the next face-off.
Out of play
The puck leaving the playing surface or contacting protective spectator netting stops play. The restart spot depends on where it was propelled or deflected and on any accompanying infraction.
Consequences
A puck out of play does not automatically mean a penalty. Deliberate delay and a direct clearance over glass from the defensive zone have separate rules. A direct deflection into goal off an official is disallowed.
