Changing a crew

World Rowing · 2025
In short

Entry changes and medical substitutions follow different procedures. Before the draw, the rules allow replacement of up to half the rowers plus the coxswain, subject to eligibility, notification and event-specific deadlines. A single sculler cannot simply be replaced for tactical reasons: illness or injury provisions govern that case.

The rule

Entry changes and medical substitutions follow different procedures. Before the draw, the rules allow replacement of up to half the rowers plus the coxswain, subject to eligibility, notification and event-specific deadlines. A single sculler cannot simply be replaced for tactical reasons: illness or injury provisions govern that case.

In practice

After a crew has raced, substitutions are restricted to approved medical cases. A single sculler who has already raced cannot be substituted. Written notification, medical evidence and organiser approval are required where applicable; a medically replaced athlete cannot return in that event. Check the championship-specific timetable instead of assuming every international regatta uses identical deadlines.
