Heats, progression and lane draws

World Rowing · 2025
In short

When entries exceed the available racing lanes, a progression system determines the finalists. The published scheme tells crews which placing advances them and which later round they enter. Seeding aims to avoid concentrating the strongest crews in the same early race; it does not guarantee qualification or a medal.

The rule

When entries exceed the available racing lanes, a progression system determines the finalists. The published scheme tells crews which placing advances them and which later round they enter. Seeding aims to avoid concentrating the strongest crews in the same early race; it does not guarantee qualification or a medal.

In practice

Lane allocation follows the applicable draw and progression rules. Championships use the World Rowing system unless an authorised modification applies. Do not assume a particular number of qualifying places or that every event includes a repechage: the actual entry count and announced system matter. Weather procedures may also change the normal arrangement.
