Weather and re-rows

World Rowing · 2025
In short

Unfair or unsafe weather can lead to different lanes, a changed timetable, suspension or an authorised modified programme. Such decisions belong to the designated officials and committees, not individual crews. A re-row may be ordered after interruption, interference, a qualifying dead heat or another situation requiring restoration of fair competition.

The rule

Unfair or unsafe weather can lead to different lanes, a changed timetable, suspension or an authorised modified programme. Such decisions belong to the designated officials and committees, not individual crews. A re-row may be ordered after interruption, interference, a qualifying dead heat or another situation requiring restoration of fair competition.

In practice

A re-row normally covers the original full distance and may involve some or all of the original crews. At international regattas, the rules allow the umpire to choose a shorter distance in the specified circumstances. Officials decide which results can stand and which crews must race again; a damaged boat or a disappointing result does not automatically earn another attempt.
