The rule

The standard international classic course is a straight 2000 m for senior, youth and para rowing. Masters normally race 1000 m. Standard international races normally use up to 6 lanes; major World Rowing courses in principle provide additional usable lanes. These are classic-course rules, not coastal or indoor distances.

In practice

The organising programme may specify an approved non-standard course, including shorter sprints or longer head races. The standard distance should therefore not be assumed for every local event. Crews must follow their allocated course and lane, with the start aligned so that different boat classes begin from the same bow line.
