Warnings, exclusion and disqualification

World Rowing · 2025
In short

Officials can issue a reprimand, a yellow card, exclusion or disqualification; relegation applies where the rules specifically allow it. Yellow cards applying to the same race accumulate: a further card means a red card and exclusion from that event. A postponement or re-row does not simply erase an existing warning.

The rule

Officials can issue a reprimand, a yellow card, exclusion or disqualification; relegation applies where the rules specifically allow it. Yellow cards applying to the same race accumulate: a further card means a red card and exclusion from that event. A postponement or re-row does not simply erase an existing warning.

In practice

Exclusion removes the crew from the event’s remaining rounds. Disqualification is broader and removes the athlete or crew from all events at the regatta. These consequences are therefore not interchangeable. Officials must communicate the sanction, and the result records the appropriate status. Serious conduct can justify a direct severe sanction without first issuing a warning.
