The rule

Crews must keep equipment safe, follow official instructions and obey the published traffic pattern during training and racing. Officials may prevent a crew from taking to the water if it poses a danger. The organiser provides safety arrangements, but athletes and team officials retain responsibility for competing safely.

In practice

At the specified World Rowing championships, cups and qualification regattas, rowers must be able to swim 50 m and keep their head above water without assistance for 3 minutes. Teams must certify the required ability. Knowing the warm-up route and stopping when instructed are essential; an allocated racing lane does not override the venue’s wider safety rules.
