The rule

In practice

Coastal endurance, beach sprints and indoor rowing have separate discipline rules. Their courses, equipment and progression must not be inferred from the classic format. Likewise, a national regatta may announce a non-standard distance. Check the event programme alongside these explanations before applying a general rule to a particular race.
