The rule

In men’s lightweight crews, the rowers’ average must not exceed 70.0 kg and no rower may exceed 72.5 kg. In women’s lightweight crews, the average limit is 57.0 kg and the individual limit is 59.0 kg. The coxswain is excluded from the average; single scullers meet the corresponding individual limit.

In practice

Crews present together for the official weigh-in in the permitted pre-race period, wearing at least their racing uniform. A further attempt is possible within that period, but missing the deadline or remaining overweight makes the crew ineligible. Substitutions must preserve both the individual limits and the recalculated crew average.
