The rule

A boat’s bow must have bright white protection in the form of a solid ball with a minimum diameter of 4 cm, or equivalent integral protection meeting the rule. Shoes and foot restraints must let rowers leave the boat without delay in an emergency. Secure footwear must not become an escape hazard.

In practice

Where shoes remain in the boat, individual heel restraints and an immediately accessible release arrangement are required. Fastenings needing release must open with a single quick hand action. Boats must also meet flotation and other construction requirements. Responsibility stays with the crew and club even if equipment has already passed an official inspection.
