Dimensions and reference volumes
FIA · 2027 · Issue 3In short
How the car is measured and its permitted envelope.
Width and wheelbase
At the prescribed legality setup, parts other than tyres, wheel rims and their specified attachments may extend no farther than 950 mm from the centre plane. The wheelbase must not exceed 3400 mm. These measurements use defined reference planes and wheel positions, rather than an informal measurement of the parked car.
Geometrical conventions
The longitudinal axis increases rearwards, the transverse axis towards the driver’s right and the vertical axis upwards. Dimensions default to millimetres unless otherwise stated. Components required to fit within a reference volume must fit entirely inside it; specified reference surfaces must be completely obscured where the rule requires this.

Three supplied FIA documents, with different seasons: general provisions 2026 (Issue 03, 25/06/2026), sporting rules 2026 (Issue 09, 01/10/2026), and technical rules 2027 (Issue 3, 01/10/2026). Read each section for its stated season. Future changes are identified separately. Independent condensed explanations; the supplied PDFs remain the source.
