Transmission
FIA · 2027 · Issue 3Rear-wheel drive, manual shift requests and restrictions on driver aids.
Drive and driver control
The transmission may drive only the rear wheels. Traction control, compensation for excessive driver torque demand and systems warning the driver of wheelspin are prohibited. Clutch paddles must follow detailed design requirements so that their signals reflect the driver’s action. Clutch engagement is normally controlled directly by the driver, with specifically defined exceptions such as gearshifts and stall prevention.
Gears and shifting
There must be 8 forward gear ratios; continuously variable transmissions and automatic gear changes are prohibited. The driver must be able to select reverse during a competition. Each individual gear change must be initiated separately by the driver, subject to defined safeguards and exceptions. Gearbox specifications, dimensions and permitted modifications are also controlled, rather than being freely changeable between events.
