Survival cell and cockpit
FIA · 2027 · Issue 3The driver’s protective structure, rollover protection and rapid escape.
Protective structure
The survival cell must be homologated and meet detailed requirements for its shape, openings and resistance to intrusion. Specified laminates protect the driver and fuel bladder, while structural calculations and tests demonstrate strength. The car also needs a principal rollover structure and the secondary structure known as the halo. Head and leg padding provide additional protection inside the cockpit.
Getting out and assisted rescue
Wearing normal driving equipment and starting with the harness fastened, the driver must remove the steering wheel and leave the car within 7 seconds, then replace the wheel within 12 seconds in total. A removable seat supports rescue without cutting or removing the safety harness. Its fittings and provisions for securing the driver and stabilising the head are prescribed.
