In short

Permitted materials and construction methods depend on the component.

Material choice is regulated

Materials must be commercially available. The rules specify permitted metals, polymers and composites, together with restrictions and exceptions for particular parts. A material allowed in one application is not automatically allowed everywhere. The plank, skids, wheel rims, brake callipers and safety laminates each have additional construction or material requirements.

Power unit restrictions

The power unit has separate rules for materials, coatings and manufacturing methods. Pistons, crankshafts, valves, exhaust components and electronic housings have specific requirements and exceptions. Restrictions on composite materials, ceramics or metallic alloys must therefore be read with the relevant component provisions. Homologated safety laminates also require representative test panels, rather than material declarations alone.
