The engine uses reciprocating pistons and a four-stroke cycle, with six equal cylinders in a V layout and a single permitted turbocharger arrangement. Only the regulated combustion engine and kinetic energy-recovery system may propel the car or recharge energy. Fuel flow, geometry, materials, control and homologation impose additional restrictions.
Electrical power is not a constant allowance
The absolute ERS-K electrical limit is 375 kW. Propulsion is further limited to 350 kW with Overtake active in the race or sprint, and 300 kW in qualifying, sprint qualifying or without Overtake in the race or sprint. Additional speed, sector and low-grip restrictions apply; the absolute limit is not freely available propulsion power.
Energy monitoring and protection
FIA-approved sensing monitors fuel delivery, electrical energy and torque. Energy storage, charging and deployment have separate limits. Battery management must detect unsafe operation and reduce power or shut down the recovery system. High-voltage insulation, isolation, warnings and fault protection are mandatory, and the system must allow shutdown through the prescribed controls.
