Protecting the driver and others

A homologated fire system discharges into the cockpit and can be triggered by the strapped-in driver or from outside, even if the main electrical circuits fail. Approved harnesses, rear-view mirrors, rear and lateral safety lights are required. Wheel tethers have separate attachment requirements, and the rear impact structure also needs a retaining tether.

Cooling and drinking

Driver cooling has defined performance requirements when a heat hazard is declared for a race or sprint. Dry ice is prohibited; the cooling medium in the driver’s equipment is restricted to approved types. Thermal stores in specified crash-protection areas require homologation. Every car must also carry a driver drink system with the prescribed capacity and location.
